Solihull

In the 2011 Census with a 123,187 population, Solihull (/ˈsɒlihʌl/, /ˈsoʊl-/ or /ˌsoʊliˈhʌl/) is a large West Midlands town. 7.5 miles (12.1 km) southeast of Birmingham, 18 miles (29 km) northwest of Warwick and 110 miles (180 km) northwest of London is Solihull. In November 2013, Solihull was named the "best place to live" in the United Kingdom by uSwitch Quality of Life Index. In 1891, Arden Golf Club, Solihull, (defunct) was founded.

There are universities within 16 mi (26 km) of the town; five in Birmingham and two in Coventry, but Solihull has no university. In the area to have a goods relief line, Solihull was rare in being one of a handful of stations. Within Solihull, the National Exhibition Centre is almost all of Birmingham Airport and the ever-expanding Birmingham Business Park. Solihull has a dedicated hedgehog conservation area, which is the UK's first.

There are sports centres at present, the Sports Centre at North Solihull that is older, and the Sports Centre of Tudor Grange that is more modern. Organised by Solihull Round Table, the annual display of fireworks that is free's venue, held on the 5 November's closest Saturday is Tudor Grange Park. The largest football club is Solihull Moors, who play at Damson Park, 2 miles (3.2 km) from the town centre. Following the Moor Green and Solihull Borough merger, the club was established in 2007 and from the National League North play in the National League at the end of the 2015-16 season after being promoted.

Thought to have derived from St Alphege, the parish church's position, on a 'soily' hill is Solihull's name. To form the Metropolitan Borough of Solihull, the Solihull was merged with the rural district surrounding Meriden in 1974. Formerly known as the Solihull College of Technology, Solihull College incorporates a University Centre which offers foundation degree and full degree courses, particularly in technical subject areas such as computer sciences and engineering.

On Warwick Road near the centre of the town, Solihull School is an independent school. Chiltern Railways and services by West Midlands Railway run express train services through Solihull. A headwater tributary of River Trent, River Blythe passes through Solihull parts including Tudor Grange Parks and Malvern. A public swimming pool on the edge of Tudor Grange Park include one of the leisure facilities that Solihull has.
